What do the little diamonds on my tape measure mean?
OK. So, I've been using a tape measure practically all my life.
Someone recently pointed something out that I had never noticed.
There is a little diamond that appears along the tick marks at intervals of 1' - 7 3/16".
(The second one appears at #' - 2 3/8", the third at 4' - 9 9/16" and so on).
What is this increment?
It doesn't appear to correlate with SAE or Metric increments.
Is it some wierd, traditional military measurement.
Help Please.
Sometimes framing members, especially floor joist are specified to be spaced at 19.2" on center. 19.2" is roughly 19 3/16" or 1' 7 3/16", so the diamonds make it easy to identify this spacing along the full length of the measure.
This has mostly come about with engineered floor joists. It is often overkill to space these at the traditional 16" on center, but 24" on center is a bit much. 19.2" is the increment in between that works well with 4' x 8' plywood laid perpendicular to the joists. 8', or 96" divided by 5 = 19.2", so the joints fall on a joist and there is no waste.
Amazing
