Which grease gun should I buy?
I'm new to auto repair, it's my new hobby. I need to grease the ball bearings in my new tool cart and maybe I'll use a hypodermic type needle to grease my car's sealed wheel bearing (don't know if that's a good idea). I'd like an air powered grease gun, but all the accessory needles say "not for use with an air gun". I understand grease at high pressure is dangerous. But it's under high pressure using a hand gun also. What to do?
I'd leave the sealed bearing alone, if you puncture the seal it may invite moisture and contaminants in. I like a standard grease gun with the pistol-grip rather than a lever since you can use it one-handed. I also like a flexible hose so you can get it on the zerk fitting easier. Air grease guns seem like over-kill to me for the home mechanic. Its way too easy to over-grease a tie rod end.
Since you're new to auto-repair have you looked into synthetic lubricants? I use and recommend Amsoil: http://www.amsoil.com/redirect.cgi?zo=1463115&page=products
and yes, they make synthetic grease
