Got any safety advice when driving a motorcycle during the rainy season?
Yesterday I was taking a curve which was not sharp at all, the bike glided as if I run through oil and I just could not avoid the fall. Thank G-d it was on a quiet street but who says next time wont be in the highway? I'm not sure about the tires but they may be preety old... anyhow, can you tell me anything at all that might help me get back confidence while on the bike???
Oil reside covers almost all roads, especially in high traffic areas such as cities and intersections. When conditions are dry - the oil is rarely a problem because it has sunken into the pavement. When water first hits the road it mixes with the oil, and as we know from chemistry class - oil is lighter than water, and therefore will come back to lie on the surface making the road extremely slippery.
To avoid these dangerous conditions - when you notice the weather first begin to rain - wait about 15-20 minutes before going out to ride. If you are already on the road when it begins to rain - get off the road as soon as possible and, again, wait about 15 minutes before returning on the road. This will give enough time for the oil to be washed away.
Here are some other tips to get your confidence back up.
Keep in mind - nearly all riders fall at some point in their riding experience. What separates the wussies from the winners is ....
Start riding again right away. If you take a break you will be reinforcing in your psyche negative thoughts about riding. Get back out there and practice your turns.
Go slower. Anyone can open up the throttle and ride off into the sunset. The hardest part of riding are the slow speed turns. Build up those skills and you'll be a master in no-time. Also, when taking turns, it is best to enter the turn very slowly. If you can go faster, it will be much easier to adjust your riding than if you were going too fast and need to slow down.
If your tires are in question check them to ensure they are in good condition. Our maintenance page has detailed instructions on how to check correct thickness and pressure: http://www.alivetoride.com/motorcycle_maintenance_start_of_season
