Heated blanket for car or camping with no electricity?
I am going to be doing a lot of camping in the fall for work. I have the option of sleeping in my covered van without the seats- I can actually fit a full sized air mattress in it! I still get so cold at night and i saw car powered blankets with a 12 volt battery. I just can't find one that can last all night and not use the stupid automatic shut-off. Do you know of any good blankets that will last at least 12 hours a day and recharge quickly for use the next night and early morning? (I have to sit outside all day and the morning are very chilly too)
First of all, with proper equipment you don't need an electric blanket.
Anyway, the 12V electric blankets I found draw 5 Amps at 12V/DC. If you run the blanket a total of 10 hours, that means your power requirement is 50AH (Amp-Hours) per day. A standard Group-34 deep cycle battery can handle this safely.
The bigger problem will be recharging the battery every day without a source of 120V/AC. There are marine (deep-cycle) battery chargers that work off your cigarette lighter, but the charging current is limited to 10A max. Since you have to keep the van engine running during the charging cycle, this means running your engine for at least 5 hours to recharge the battery.
A better solution would be to connect the deep cycle battery to your car's charging circuit using a dual battery charger/isolator. Now your van's alternator/generator can charge your deep cycle battery (as well as your main starting battery) while the engine is running. Since the alternator/generator will typically produce 20A+ excess current at engine idle, your deep cycle battery can be recharged in about 2.5 hours.
(Note that your deep cycle battery should not be mounted inside the cabin of the van unless it is enclosed in an air-tight box vented to the outside of the van. Batteries release toxic and flammable gases while charging.)
Another alternative would be a high-capacity portable power pack, such as the Xantrex XPwrpack 1500, which incorporates a battery, charger, 12V/DC outlet and 120V/AC outlets with inverter into a single (large/heavy) unit. Most portable power packs would not have the capacity to run your blanket for 10, even 8 hours, but this Xantrex unit claims 60AH capacity, which would be sufficient. The downside is the cost and long advertised charging time (6 to 8 hours)
