Vacuum Box vs Dry Cabinet?
I was wondering of buying a vacuum box or a dry cabinet for my camera set.
Is the dry cabinet is consuming a lot of electricity(I will be using the Wonderful brand)?
Which one is a better choice?
Thanks
There is another simpler option which works very well and doesn't use electricity.
Use a desiccator !
You can make one at home. Buy self indicating silica get crystals. These crystals are dark blue (usually) in color when dry and they turn transparent or white when hydrated. Get a big airtight, transparent box. Keep a bowl full of these blue crystals in the box and all the optics you want to keep in it. Close the box.
Look at the box after a day. The crystals would have lost some of the color but should not have turned white or totally transparent. If this stage continues, you have yourself a dry-box with indicator to show when you need to replace the crystals.
I use around 250 gm of crystals in a box containing 5 lenses and two camera bodies. You'll have to see how much volume by weight can your crystals adsorb water and keep accordingly.
These crystals are available in any science store and are quite inexpensive. In fact you can reheat the crystals to dehydrate them when you want to reuse !
