Age to start working on cars?
Me and my friends (ages 12-14) want to build a lightweight car/heavy duty go kart. Our plan was to strip an old truck or motorcycle and use it for some parts in a go kart thing. The objective was to learn about cars, trucks, and motorbikes and overall automotive. We were going to rip out the engine, clean and rebuild if necessary, then put it into a go kart frame that we custom made out of aluminum and steel. I have some questions:
Should we lift it out of a bike or a truck?
How much power should we need to go around 50-60? The thing would be pretty super heavy. As many as 6, 150lbs people, plus the frame, and the engine. That could be anywhere over about 1500lbs.
Are we a bit young for this?
Could we rent the tools for this?
Good idea to learn about cars and things like that for when we are old enough to drive and have to repair our own cars?
Thanks
you wont be able to do it without tools that you own and you wont be able to do that without a good knowledge of cars and how they work
car engine will not work on a gokart end of story so throw that out the window
you wont be able to build your own frame without knowing how to weld and a simple knowledge of physics and the propertys of the metals (aluminum requirering a extremely high heat to accept the welds)
you wont be able to rent the tools needed and all of the tools you would need would cost around 6k just for the tools not including specialty tools
you wont be able to use a motorcycle engine without knowledge of how it works and the proper belts and ability to wire it correctly
if you want a good start look at a self propelled lawnmower thats the basic method you should be using it wont be able to hold all of you but one at a time
it wouldnt go close to 50-60 maybe 15-20 right off a lawnmower
its going to be costly no matter what motor/materials you use so i dont want to seem harsh but i wouldnt bother unless your familys have money to throw around with projects
