Post ACL surgery should I be worried (knee crushed in car accident)?
It has been a year now since my surgery and I have been taking it easy on my knee for fear of ripping the auto graft. I have not been very active besides the 2 mths of physical therapy but I returned to work after 6 mths doing plenty of walking and lifting around the hospital. I have been medically discharged (it has been a year now) but now it is starting to act up on me. I tryed to go bowling and could not even make it through 2 games because my knee felt fairly wobbly and slightly painfull. I am getting freaked out because I still do not feel comfortable running and it pops as I bring it back and forth. I even still sleep with a pillow under my knee at night to rest it. I was so optimistic a couple of mths ago and now I feel like the graft didn't hold (its not even comfy to sleep on my side). Man this is frustrating should I be exercising more or just letting it heal? Is this at all normal? Any input? I am afraid of living the rest of my life as a cripple.
Kevin
There are several factors that one should consider and should have considered before and after surgery.
First, never go to a knee doctor without asking several people if they know that doctor and how well their operations worked. Im not kidding. Been there done that.
Secondly. it is more important than you think to do the theraputic excercises. Dont cheat and do them as often as you can. Strengthen your knee. Just don't push it beyond the limit or you will be back where you started.
Everyone I have talked to about knee injuries have all expressed a lack of confidence in that knee. This is true because of the pain that was felt. It hurts bad and any pain you have after healing robs you of confidence in that knee.
One fact you have to face is that in most damaged knees the knee will never be the same. Depending on your age and physical condition you may have to slow down in the activities that you do to conserve that knee.
I would say that you ought to seek out two highly recommended Orthopedic surgeons and compare their opinions. It is a very bad idea to try to find the cheapest doctor. I went to the best and it was well worth it. I wound up paying more out of pocket but like I say it was worth the extra cost. Please believe me not all orthopedic surgeons are equal. Talk to other people who have had knee problems and find out what they think about the doctors they went too.
Popping can be one of many things. It could signal that there is still loose joint material that is causing your knee to be in a bind. Many other things too.
Cartlage and joints are not easily repaired. I am told that ligaments can heal over night (if they are not torn apart) but that they hurt for a year or even longer after they heal.
Take it easy for a while but don't stop trying to do the therapy excercises unless you think you are damaging the knee.
See the (good) docs.
