Question for any licensed electricians please?
Hi, I was told that you CAN run a 240 volt arc welder off of a 30 amp dryer circuit. Is this true? On the contrary, I have heard that arc welders require a 50 amp circuit and breaker. I may very well be wrong, but the ONLY time that I could see a "buzz box" 240 volt arc welder pulling 50 amps would be when the arc welder is set to the MAXIMUM amperage of 225 amps. This WILL burn up the welder due to the HIGH likelihood of exceeding the duty cycle of the machine when set to the maximum amperage of 225 amps on the machine. "Buzz box" welders are simply not made to run at these high amperages for any appreciable amount of time without exceeding the duty cycle of the machine and thus overheating and burning up. With that being said, do you think that I could run a buzz box type arc welder at a MAXIMUM of 115 amps WITHOUT tripping the 30 AMP clothes dryer circuit breaker?
If you had a clamp meter you could test it.
Clamp your clamp meter around one hot wire of the incoming power circuit, then strike an arc at say at the 90 Amp setting first and have an assistant watch the clamp meter to see what it draws. If it's less than 30 Amps, then crank it up some more and do another arc/draw test. That way you can determine your power ceiling on a 30 AMP line. Maybe limit your draw at say 28 Amps
