What is the power difference between a four barrel Holley carburetor and dual su carburetors?
I have a 1971 datsun 240z with dual su carbs.Lately my car has been stumbling on me alot. When I try driving it I give it gas but it just stumbles and it won't move. I tried cleaning my gas tank n sealing it, replacing fuel pump, filters all that good stuff. All of my ignition was also replaced wires, sparkplugs, cap, rotor, and the coil. Now I know my carbs are out sync but I've tried syncing it with a synchronizer but no luck. So I been thinking about replacing the su carbs either with a single four barrel Holley carb or with original restored su carbs. So I want to know what the difference in power is and if my problem can be fixed how can i fix it. Thanks
Hi Josh! I would recommend you rebuild or replace your SU carbs assuming the rest of the engine is stock.
The main reason dual side-draft carbs have sync problems is because of the linkage system is worn out. Get it repaired or replaced along with both the carbs and your carburetion issues should be solved.
Installing a Holley 4bl is an option but realize it requires a new intake manifold, air cleaner, throttle linkage and likely a certain amount of fabrication to work right.
As far as a power difference, you MIGHT see a small difference in the top end power using the Holley but unless your engine has been modded and set up to take advantage of the increased CFM your probably just going to be wasting fuel and money.
But..If your dead-set on using a Holley 4bl you could do what I did with my 71' 240Z....Rip out the stock 6cyl and install a Chevy 350 V8.
