help ford fiesta TDI 51reg cracked head?

please can someone help me. when driving home last night m car was making a slightly unusual noise like the fans were going. when i stopped my car and lifted the bonnet and removed the cap from the water dark greyish/black sludge was coming from the water -thickish in consistency ! no lights had come on on my dashboard and the engine was not too hot to touch just warm still.
there is still plenty of oil in it when i have dipsticked it too. the car starts fine and i have taken it to a garage today and the man said he is 80% certain the head has cracked? he said it is not the head gasket. he is going to test it tomorrow so i know for certain but he said it will cost me hundreds as a big job !!! i'm worried sick i just cant afford it.
has anyone got any advice? what will be my best options?
will anything else need replacing if the head is cracked?
help!!!
