im looking for a good, easy to use 4 post auto lift?
There are several auto lifts out there such as "Backyard Buddy"..."Eagle Auto Lifts"...etc...i have no clue which ones are good or bad. I've heard that many are made with cheap steel from overseas and others use poor motors to lift the cars. Does anybody have experience with these units? Most of the ones im looking at are 7000 to 9000lb lifts and they cost between $2150 and $3000
I've also come across "Titan Lifts" ..."Excel Lifts" .."Metro Lifts" .."Pro-Park from Direct-Lift" and a unit from "North American Auto Equipment". If you have info on any of these, id really appreciate hearing about them. Please remember that i have a budget of $3000. I know there are several heavy duty commercial units available but they are way too expensive for me. Also, i can NOT use a 2 post lift for my application.
I here this question a lot I have worked directly with automotive lifts for the past 4 years and grew up around them my whole life (from Madison, Indiana home of Rotary)
The best advice I could give you is do not pay attention to a brand names and don't believe what someone else tells you about a lift based on a brand name because they might have alterier motives. I see a lot of people on the web say buy this brand or that brand and I know for a fact some of those people are on the take for that company. Some are honest most are not.
Here is what you should pay attention to
1. Safety Features - The more the better the bigger the better pretty simple huh? If your lift lacks these it can bite you and when a lift bites you it can kill you so don't ignore this. I don't want to die under some lift, I want to die in Madison while I'm in the middle of eating a Hinkle burger (look them up there delicious) The major safety features on a 4 post lift are the locking systems(varies from lift to lift some are air operated some are manual, some have hanging lock ladders (modern design advantage of this is it allows for a back up lock in case one fails) some have welded tabs on the side of the columns (old style and creates a pinch point so watch your fingers and no back up lock) =) Then you got whatever it is Backyard Buddy has I don't know what that is but it works. Flow restrictors are a must for the hydraulic system this will save you in case someone chops your hydraulic line with a hatchet and all the oil is released from the cylinder. Your lift will descend at a slow rate instead of a direct drop. If someone tries to sell you a lift without a flow restrictor look at them, let them know they are special, and leave immediately. Some 4 posts come with overhead shut off cables to keep you from lifting your car into the room above your garage =) This isn't something you need but I am just letting you know some do come with this.
2. Overall structure of the lift - If you can walk up to the lift column on the lift and spread it with your hands don't buy it. Some manufactures of the cheaper lifts really push the limit on the thickness of steel of their lift columns and runways. This is more an issue on 2 post lifts but it can also create issues on 4 post. Standard thickness is 3/16" on the columns and runways and 3/8" on cables. The pulleys should be around 4-6 inches in diameter and solid all the way through. Some lifts will have pulleys that are spoked. I have seen the lift cables cut through these pulleys and the lift will drop in 1 corner and could possibly dump the vehicle if it is not in park =<
3. Who are you buying from? - There are a lot of people selling lifts and I am not just talking retail either. You can find lifts on eBay and Craigslist all day, most are used but you can find some that are new but it is ebay/craigslist so roll the dice if you feel lucky =) A lot of companies that have come online in the past few years are just drop shippers and do not have a show room. I don't like this, here is why... You really need to go see the lift before you buy it. Go and measure it yourself bring a tape measure and a micrometer and measure that lift yourself. Do not trust their measurements!!! I'm not saying they are misleading you with their measurements I'm saying they probably just measured them incorrectly. Then you have what I call a legitimate lift retailer this means they have an actual location that you can go and see the lift, purchase it and leave with it. You know like a normal store =) The legitimate retailer also probably will cut you a deal on the lift if you go to their location and get it.
4.Lift Maintenance- It is a piece of equipment and things go wrong so make sure when you buy a lift you can get parts for that lift. You can also contact your local lift installer in case you need parts or support in fixing your lift. Some companies say they offer technical support but usually they just call the local lift installer guy in your area anyways. Check your local auto parts store for the contact info for a lift installer or ask whoever you purchased the lift from if there is anyone they would recommend.
I could go on but I will stop there. Hopefully this helps you make a decision but don't rush you probably have saved up money for while to get a lift. It wont hurt to wait a little longer and get the one you want.
