What's wrong with my window?

I have a 1996 E36 BMW 328i coupe. The driver side window goes up and down but when it almost reach the top it starts to make bad noise( boom,boom,boom...). Whats wrong with it? Is it the Window Regulator/Window reg clip? i don't have money to bring it to bmw and check. whats my option.

Several things are a possibility (key word - possibility). This is going to be a long post. If its too much for you - take it to a BMW specialist. In my case, I didn't need to replace an arm or motor or regulator, thats an okay route to take, but you may be able to diagnose it yourself and use my experience as an option:

I found on my E36 that the regulator arms that hold the window and lift it, lower it, catch on a rivet inside, thus making a hard clank/boom sound.

You are going to need to take the panel off, carefully remove the mirror adjuster, there's a screw in there, you're going to need a special screw, I think a star-type screw, long, I forget the size, use a flashlight to look at it carefully, or ask a dealer to look it up for you or look it up in the internet. You're going to have to make the time to find that screw driver.

Just be wary of the internet because you're going to waste time and even get distracted in forums, its a waste, just do it normal-human and go to the dealer and have the screw size looked up.

Don't lose that screw, very hard to replace, sort of. Then you also should look up the door panels plugs or whatever they're called that hold the panel to the door. Pry those off carefully, don't damage it, just snap those out and be very careful with the speaker cables, unplug them, easy to re-plug, and set the panel aside somewhere safe and away from the doors.

Now, its going to be time consuming and work, expect some bicep power and wear to kick in, watch your shoulders, and be extremely careful with your fingers and hands.

Carefully with key in accessory bit by bit raise and lower the window. Watch at what point you see it "boom" or "clank". It will be louder without the panel.

Look at the regulator arms, most likely one of them is slightly bent looking at the center of each arm most likely the one closes to the regulator motor thing. Now, there's a rivet on that motor housing, you may see some wear, and a mark on one of the arms.

You have to sand that off and straighten up the arm with a mallet or a strong screw tethered to another part, it ain't easy, have someone help you, watch your fingers.

Now, the CLIPS that act as a guide in the window guides, most likely the guide's grease is dried up and causing things to overwork and mis-align and so on. You need to replace those window clips with fresh ones. You also need to re-grease the window guides with I forget the grease.

So few things you should then get at a BMW dealer - clips for all windows, why not do the passenger side, maybe a printout of the window regulator illustration, door panel, etc. and what type of grease to use.

Test the glass and very, very important, double check the inner felt window guide that goes on either side of the door that acts as a guide and support for the glass. Do not throw it away, re-glue it, fix it, replace it.

Usually when those wear out, when you have the door window all the way down and shut the door, the window rattles. Both on the driver side and passenger side. And go ahead and clean up in there while your at it. You love your BMW right? Its a labor of love.
