Is my cat dying? She's 18 and seems really sick?

I woke up this morning and found that my cat had lost a patch of hair almost overnight on her back that's about 8 inches long and an inch in diameter (it looks like she was eating it) She's been real lethargic today and not responding to me when I call her. She always comes when I call her and today she's been running away and hiding in different places. Are these signs? Should I bring her to the vet? She' goes into shock every time she goes in the car so I'm worried about putting her through more stress?

Please call the vet or take her to an emergency animal hospital as soon as possible! Have somebody drive you to the animal hospital and hold your cat on the trip to the hospital, I know everybody will tell you to crate the kitty before traveling but I have a cat who went into distress each time I would try to take him in the car and holding him en route was the only way I could take him to the vet when he got sick without freaking him out even more. Cats tend to go off on their own when they are ill or dying, please take your cat to the animal hospital. The shock of a car ride is far less traumatic than being ill.
