can s.w.a.t. helmets be used as a motorcycle helmet?
do the helmets that s.w.a.t. teams wear meet dot standards? i'm looking for a open faced helmet with a lower profile. and i like that style of helmet,
If you are in the U.S. it depends what state you are in.
I know of at least one U.S. state where there is a helmet law but technically they have no authority to adopt or enforce federal DOT standards for motorcycle helmets unless it is a rented motorcycle. Your State Highway Patrol Website will most likely have some information about the helmet law in your state. You can use it as a guidline, but I have found that some Highway Patrols publish a misinterpretation of the law. To find out for sure, go to your state's legislative Website and check the revised codes and and administrative codes.
There are laws requiring all motorcyclists to wear a helmet in 20 states and the District of Columbia.
Laws requiring only some motorcyclists to wear a helmet are in place in 27 states.
There is no helmet law in three states.
In Alabama there is a helmet law for all ages.
In Alaska you must wear a helmet if you are under 18.
In Arkansas you must wear a helmet if you’re under 21
California – helmet law
Colorado – 18 & passenger
Connecticut – 18, permit holders.
Delaware – 19 permit holders, reflectorization. approved by the Secretary of Safety and Homeland Security (WTF??)
Florida – 21, Medical insurance.
Georgia – helmet law.
Hawaii – 18, reflectorization.
Idaho – 18
Illinois – no helmet laws
Indiana – 18 permit holders.
Iowa – no helmet law.
Kansas – 18
Kentucky – 21 permit holders
Louisiana – helmet law.

Most states assume federal standard FMVSS 218.
Don't assume that your state does. Research the law and fight for your rights.
If you don't want to do the research yourself, contact your local ABATE chapter. They have already done the research and will most likely have the correct answer for you.
