I know nothing about car stereos...educate me please?
My car currently has the OEM cassette head unit and horrible OEM "premium" speakers that distort with the volume turned up halfway. I just bought 4 new speakers to install. They are Infinity "Reference" 60w rms/ 180w peak speakers. I've read and was told when buying the speakers that I should look at the rms power when comparing speakers. Now I'm looking around to buy a new CD head unit. I don't want to spend too much moolah and found a basic unit that I like. It says it's only 14w rms/ 50w peak output x 4 channel. This means what?Crutchfield says the higher the rms of the head unit, the louder and clearer the sound quality. I definitely want good sound quality. That's why I spent a little extra to get the Infinity speakers. Given the specs of the speakers I just bought, what kind of output should I be looking for in a new CD head unit? I DON'T want to blow my speakers out. Should the rms and peak outputs of the new CD head unit I buy be lower than that of the speakers?
I would recommend going with any radio and getting an amp for them. Almost any radio you buy is only gonna have a rms output of about (22rms at most). Because you bought some really quality speakers I would amp them. (Your speakers will still work without an amp but not at their full potential) When you get the amp you will allow your speakers to produce the way they were designed to. I say go with a 4 channel amp if you bought 4 new speakers and a 2 channel if you only replaced 2 of them. I hope this helps if you need more help email me wowboy05@yahoo.com Good Luck
