can you charge a car audio capacitor with a spare battery before you put it in?
i have a monster cable capacitor (1 farad with a digital readout) i just need to know if i can charge this up with a spare battery and then put it in instead of using the lightbulb method. Is this aight?
cuz i dont want to
No...
The reason you charge a cap is to equalize the voltage in the cap to that of your power wire. When a cap is discharged it is basically a dead short. That means if you tried to connect it to the power cable in your car there would be a 12volt difference. That means a big spark when the two touch. When you charge it you bring the voltage of the cap to the same as the power wire.
Either way you have to charge it. You will still have a big spark if you tried to charge it on a spare battery. This is not only dangerous but also bad for the terminals on your car. Also, if you charge it on a spare battery and then disconnect it you will need to recharge it again anyways.
Just get a small light bulp or even a resistor will work. The only disadvantage with a resistor is you don't know when the cap is totally charged.
Good Luck!!!
