Clipping and my subwoofer amp?
I have an Infinity Reference 311a amp for my Infinity Reference 1230w subwoofer in a vented enclosure.
I understand that at "musical peaks" the clip light may come on on the amp, but is this acceptable, is it bad for the amp and sub in the long run? Or should I adjust the input level so that don't see the clip light as much as I do? Right now I only see the clip light at these "musical peaks."
Also, I feel that my amp is not powerful enough for my sub. The sub has a power rating of 1230w but the amp I'm using for it is the cheapest of the 3 reference series amps available. Should I switch amps to receive a better bass and one of more quality (and ultimately volume)?
All your help is extremely appreciated!
The input sensitivity (gain control) may be set too high. If the volume is turned up beyond the capability of the speakers, this can cause the speakers to appear shorted to the amp. It is typical that the maximum safe volume setting may be less than 3/4 of the way up. A volume setting higher than that can either cause extreme distortion from the speakers or may cause the amplifier to clip the output signal. Either one of these problems can cause the protect circuit to engage, and cut out the sound. Try reducing the gain to see if the amp still cuts off. Also the power and ground cable to the amp may be too light of a gauge, preventing the amp from getting enough current to provide its full output. Check the size that you installed against the manufacturer-recommended gauge, normally listed in the owner's manual.
