A Jeep Wrangler is a compact 4x4 sports utility vehicle that debuted in 1987. The Jeep Wrangler succeeds the jeep of World War II and has become a true American icon. Jeeps are best known for being rugged off road military vehicles. The civilian jeep better known as the CJ was inspired by the military jeeps and became the predecessor of the Jeep Wrangler.

The Wrangler was inspired by the CJ but offering more comforts of a modern passenger vehicle. The Wrangler sported a larger wheel base, less ground clearance and much more passenger comfort. The Wrangler quickly became a versatile vehicle both on and off the road, appealing to a broader consumer base.

The live axels in both front and back mimicked the original CJ design. The Wrangler design was easily recognized as a workhorse and its off road ruggedness. Off road fans honored the Jeeps mechanics and found it to be a fun loving vehicle. However, the new upgrades changed the off road performance especially with the lower ground clearance and lower center of gravity. Many off road enthusiast detested the new design and nicknamed the Wrangler the "Yuppie Jeep". The Wrangler proved to be very adaptable and began altering the views of the off road enthusiast.

The Jeep Wrangler is one of the most reasonable priced 4x4 sports utility vehicles. When compared to other sports utility vehicles it has been ranked one of the best vehicles to hold its value and ranks in the top four for best resale value. The Wrangler is a smart purchase not to mention an off road rugged fun vehicle.

AMC was the first to design the Wrangler with it making its first appearance in 1987. Shortly after the Wrangler was introduced AMC was sold to Chrysler with the Jeep becoming a new division of Chrysler. The Wrangler was produced in Ontario Canada until 1992. When the Canada plant closed, production of the Wrangler was moved to Toledo Ohio where it has continued its reign.

In 1997 Chrysler decide it was time to revamp the Wrangler by including new features and additional modern equipment. The original body style stayed intact however, the wheel base was made wider and additional ground clearance was added. The notable revisions to the Wrangler included anti-sway bars, a lower center of gravity and the original round headlights. The new improvements appealed to both the modern consumer and the outdoor off road enthusiast. Purchasers loved the improved handling and added passenger comfort of the improved Wrangler.

The next redesign of the Wrangler took place in 2007, adding even more consumer friendly revisions and making it more off-road compatible. The Wrangler was now offered in two and four door styles. The classic two door styling held true to its shorter style therefore appealing to the off road enthusiast. The all new four door style with the larger body type appealed to the other consumers.

Jeep Wranglers can represent the classic rugged, durable and fun sports utility vehicle or the more modern durable inexpensive highly adaptable sports utility vehicle. Whether it is the classic or the more modern style, the Jeep Wrangler is both smart and fun.
