Getting a nice non-standard bike plate for your motorcycle is one of the most popular modification amongst those of us who like to stand out from the crowd.

It doesn't matter if you are building a bike for use on the public highways or you're trying to create a show winning vehicle you'll want to get yourself a number plate that enhances the style of your bike.

If you live in the UK them you'll know that it never used to be very difficult to find someone who could make up a plate to exact specifications no matter what design you wanted.

It is still possible to find companies online who will sell you a custom plate but you'll need to finish the job yourself as they will only send you a number plate kit. They provide a blank number plate and a transfer which you have to apply yourself, not a tough job but the end product is never as good.

The reason its now so much more difficult to find someone who will do the dirty work for you in regards to number plate manufacturer is that it is now illegal to supply number plates which have the potential to be used on the public highway that don't meet the specifications set out by the DVLA.

UK companies selling plates for road use need to meet the standards or they face the possibility of being prosecuted. These legal plates are obviously nice and easy to read by the police and other road users so its not hard to understand why we are required to follow these rules.

To get a custom bike plate without making it up yourself you will have to do some searching for a manufacturer who is willing to take some risks. You also have to decide whether taking the risk of running illegal plates is worth it as a 30 fine and points on your license could be the result if you get caught.
