Veggie Fuel
Did you know that biodiesel has been tested and approved by many of the top government and environmental agencies?? More people than ever are realising the benefits of using this clean burning renewable fuel source. Biodiesel is made from sources such as animal waste and vegetable oil. The oil is mixed with methanol and lye and converted into biodiesel by using a processor to modify the mix
The popularity of converting vegetable oil into biodiesel has grown in recent years; with more people than ever before joining the biodiesel community, and producing their own homemade biodiesel!!
One thing you may not realise is that biodiesel is actually better for your car's engine than regular diesel!! This is because biodiesel contains more lubricant properties and burns cleaner than other diesel and petroleum fuels. Another great advantage is that the emissions generate quite a satisfying smell
Why is biodiesel better for your own personal health than any other forms of fuel?? Regular diesel produces harmful exhaust emissions; these fumes pose problems to both the environment and the human body. Studies have shown that biodiesel is actually less toxic than table salt, and is as biodegradable as sugar!!
Did you know that by making your own biodiesel you can reduce your fuel costs to as little as 50 cents a gallon?? When starting out it's always best to begin by making a few test batches. The more familiar you become with the process the easier it gets
To make a successful test batch of you need to make certain you are using the correct mixture of lye!! If you are using unused vegetable oil then you need to use 4 grams of lye. And if you are using used vegetable oil you need to use 6 grams of lye. You can start out making test batches using a simple blender.
This mixture can get very hot, so make sure to wear gloves and goggles, and use a big thick mixing bowl!! The first step is to slowly add your lye and methanol, simultaneously. Keep mixing until the lye has dissolved, and you'll be left with a substance known as methoxide!! You will then need to pre-heat the vegetable oil and mix with the methoxide. Put your mixture into the blender for 30 mins, with the blender running on slow. You then need to allow the mixture to settle for 24 hours!! Once settled you should have thin liquid on the top and thick liquid on the bottom.
Making your own homemade biodiesel can be a fun and rewarding hobby. Not only can you use the skills you gain to help friends and family, you can also start your own mass biodiesel production, and earn some extra money.
