When a person purchases a pickup truck, chances are it will be used for hauling many things. Sometimes it may not be the things of the owner, but things friends need help moving. There is usually hydraulics that compensates the weight and makes opening and closing extremely easy. There is also a locking mechanism that locks the cover to the tailgate.

Finally, there are many types of truck bed covers to choose from. Depending on what protection is needed or what type of truck is owned, will decide which type of cover to install. New trucks are not factory equipped with any type of bed cover in most cases. You may have to request the style you desire.
