Where Has All The SplitFire Gone?
SplitFire Spark Plugs were heavily advertised in the early 1990s. SplitFire plugs featured a unique split ground electrode design. The patented SplitFire "V" design on the side electrode helped improve combustion efficiency. Because the flame kernel is not blocked by a solid electrode as in other plugs, it could efficiently travel upward through the "v" notch into the combustion chamber.
SplitFire Spark Plugs as we know them are no longer available domestically. As a replacement, SplitFire recently released the SplitFire Classic " a traditional spark plug with a standard electrode, available in nickel and platinum.
For original SplitFire V spark plug enthusiasts, E3 Spark Plugs offer a unique electrode design, using the same concept as Splitfire.
E3 has taken the best features from traditional spark plugs, such as cut-back ground electrodes and surface gaps, and combined them to create a new ground electrode design. Surface gap plugs present the flame kernel to the piston (or rotor) more directly, reducing the travel time from the spark to the combustion gases (Although this difference is only measurable in hundred-thousands of a second, at 5000 RPM, they can add up).
This prevents the "doughnut" shaped flame front created by traditional plug electrodes. This is achieved in the E3 design through the open section at the top of the ground electrode. E3 spark plugs combine the benefits of sharp electrode edges with a cut-back electrode design that is used on some racing plugs. The increased of availability of edge-to-edge surface area encourages a more rapid spark discharge while also reducing quenching and shadowing. The three legs that support the special geometry of E3's automotive plug ground electrodes aid in heat dissipation to promote longer electrode life. The center electrode on E3 spark plugs is created from a nickel alloy with a copper center core for both improved conductivity and heat dissipation.
